Job Description:

Our client in the FMCG/Retail/Distribution sector is looking for an experienced Logistics & Despatch Manager to join their team.

Job Purpose

Lead and manage all despatch, logistics, and fleet operations to ensure efficient, accurate, and timely delivery of products to retail and wholesale customers. The role oversees vehicle fleet management, stock movement control, route planning, team leadership, cost management, and compliance with health and safety standards to support the organization's operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Despatch Operations:

  • Direct and oversee the daily activities of the despatch department.
  • Ensure all retail and wholesale customer orders are accurately picked, loaded, and dispatched on time.
  • Monitor despatch performance and implement improvements to increase efficiency and service levels.
  • Coordinate communication between factory, sales, and transport teams to ensure smooth order fulfilment.

Logistics Management:

  • Plan and manage efficient delivery schedules and transport routes.
  • Coordinate logistics activities to maximize vehicle utilization and delivery performance.
  • Monitor delivery timelines and resolve transportation issues promptly.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency and reduce logistics costs.

Fleet Management:

  • Manage and oversee a logistics fleet of 15 trucks and a passenger fleet of 30 vehicles.
  • Ensure all vehicles are roadworthy, properly licensed, insured, and compliant with company policies.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance, servicing, repairs, and inspections for all vehicles.
  • Monitor fleet performance, fuel consumption, vehicle utilization, and operating costs.

Inventory and Stock Control:

  • Maintain accurate records of all stock movements within the warehouse and distribution network.
  • Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies and variances.
  • Ensure all stock transactions are correctly recorded and documented.
  • Support inventory control processes to maintain high levels of stock accuracy.

Team Leadership:

  • Supervise, train, and support logistics and despatch personnel.
  • Set performance targets and conduct regular team evaluations.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet operational requirements.

Health, Safety, and Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and company policies.
  • Promote safe working practices within the warehouse, despatch, and fleet operations.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions where necessary.

Cost Control and Continuous Improvement:

  • Monitor logistics and transport expenditure against budget.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline operations and improve productivity.
  • Implement initiatives that reduce costs while maintaining service quality.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • On-time delivery performance.
  • Order accuracy and despatch efficiency.
  • Fleet utilization and vehicle downtime.
  • Fuel consumption and transport cost control.
  • Stock accuracy and inventory integrity.
  • Health and safety compliance.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree or Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transport Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in logistics, transport, warehousing, or distribution management.
  • Proven experience managing vehicle fleets and logistics operations.
  • Strong understanding of inventory management and stock control procedures.
  • Experience with fleet management systems and ERP software is advantageous.
