SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER – TANZANIA
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Sustainability Manager to lead the sustainability agenda across a large agricultural and manufacturing operation in Tanzania. This is a senior leadership role requiring strong operational sustainability experience across agricultural supply chains, farmer programmes, environmental and social performance, customer requirements and ESG governance.
The successful candidate will provide strategic direction while ensuring sustainability priorities are effectively implemented across both farmer/supply-chain and factory operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the Tanzania sustainability strategy and implementation roadmap.
- Drive sustainability programmes across agricultural supply chains, farmer operations and factory activities.
- Lead sustainable agriculture, farmer livelihoods, human rights and social due-diligence initiatives.
- Oversee environmental performance, GHG priorities and sustainability risk management.
- Manage customer sustainability programmes, commitments and reporting requirements.
- Ensure strong ESG data governance, traceability, documentation and reporting.
- Lead sustainability audits, external assurance and verification processes.
- Identify and manage environmental, social, regulatory, customer and reputational risks.
- Advise senior leadership on material ESG risks, priorities and opportunities.
- Lead the sustainability team and drive cross-functional ownership across the wider business.
Requirements:
- Relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Business, Engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum 8+ years’ senior sustainability/ESG experience.
- Strong tobacco industry experience highly preferred; alternatively, substantial experience within agriculture, agro-processing, commodities or a comparable complex supply-chain environment.
- Strong sustainable agriculture and farmer/grower programme experience.
- Experience in human rights, social due diligence and environmental management.
- Strong customer-facing ESG and sustainability programme experience.
- Experience with ESG audits, external assurance, compliance and corrective-action processes.
- Strong ESG data governance, traceability and reporting capability.
- Proven ability to advise and influence senior executives and lead across multiple operational functions.
- Commercially astute, hands-on and highly autonomous, with the ability to translate sustainability strategy into practical operational delivery.
